The Board of Health for Huron Perth Public Health is calling for a basic income, in the wake of COVID-19.
As Canadians suffer unprecedented job losses due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, health officials warn the basic needs of individuals are often not met when income is lost.
“Basic income is payment made directly to people with low income, whether or not they work for pay. It would help people meet their needs, participate in society and live with dignity.”
Other regional organizations to endorse a basic income is the United Way of Perth-Huron, who found half the households in the two counties earn less than the living wage of $17.55 an hour, as well as Poverty to Prosperity (P2P), Huron County’s anti-poverty coalition.
