The city is receiving approximately $6.1 million in federal funding to invest in Orillia Transit through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Plan (ICIP).
The funding will support the installation of a new smart pay system, security cameras and bike racks on buses, the purchase and installation of new transit shelters throughout the city, the design and construction of a new transit terminal and the replacement of conventional and specialized buses.
“The improvements we are able to make in Orillia’s transit system as a result of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Plan will result in enhanced safety, access, convenience, comfort and efficiency of our transit system. The City of Orillia has invested significantly in modernizing our transit system over the past five years. Infrastructure investments such as these will continue to help support and grow the local economy during these challenging times,” said Mayor Steve Clarke.
The ICIP is funded by the federal, provincial and municipal governments. The province announced approximately $5 million in funding for Orillia through the program at an announcement in Orillia in August 2019. The City’s contribution is approximately $4 million.
The Honourable Catherine McKenna, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities and the Honourable Laurie Scott, Ontario’s Minister of Infrastructure were in the City of Kawartha Lakes on Sept. 18 to announce the funding for 30 projects across Central, North and Southern Ontario.
