The Avon Maitland District School Board will be receiving over $2.1 million in additional funding, to ensure a safer return to class.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced $2 billion in funding to provinces and territories this week to help with re-opening schools in the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak, with Ontario receiving $381 million.
Officials with the AMDSB say their portion is $2,126,181.
In an e-mail to Country 104.9 News, Superintendent of Corporate Services and Treasurer Cheri Carter says the funds will pay for:
1. Additional Teaching Staff (for the new Remote Learning Schools)
2. School Reopening Emerging Issues (will be used for things like additional school based staff, technology, building readiness costs not funded by other grants)
3. Transportation (enhanced Health & Safety measures)
4. Remote Learning (Administration for the Remote Learning Schools)
5. Special Education and Mental Health (to implement direct supports for students)
Carter says it was unclear how some safety measures would be funded for the upcoming academic year, but the additional funding helps to alleviate financial pressure on the school board.
