Meaford council has approved a contract for the rehabilitation of a portion of Edwin Street.
At its meeting Monday, council resolved to award a $192,000 tender to E.C. King Contracting for the resurfacing of Edwin Street between Highway 26 and the entrance of Beautiful Joe Park.
It was the lone bid received for the project.
The approved contract includes the demolition of the existing surface and shoulders, as well as asphalt resurfacing and the installation of guardrails.
The total cost comes in $13,000 under what was allocated in Meaford's 2020 budget for the work.
Meaford's Director of Infrastructure Management and Financial Services Darcy Chapman told councillors there is no expectation from staff that the municipality will actually be able to get 20-25 years out of the new road surface.
“There needs to be extensive road bed work that needs to happen,” Chapman explains. “It's just not in the plan right now, because the underground infrastructure is about 8-10 years away from needing to be re-done.”
According to a municipal staff report, work on Edwin Street was originally approved to be a reclaimed asphalt project but when it went out to tender only one bid came back that was well over budget.
Municipal staff determined completing asphalt resurfacing would create a less expensive, better road.
Work is expected to commence on the Edwin Street rehabilitation sometime late next month and will be complete by the end of September.
