A South Bruce resident is out $12,000 after falling victim to a phone scam.
Provincial Police say the fraudster called the victim and told them “your social insurance number has been compromised” and it was being investigated by the Canada Revenue Agency and Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
The scammer then provided the victim instructions on depositing money into a “Bitcoin machine” and successfully duped the South Bruce resident out of $12,000.
“Tech-savvy scammers use technology to create very convincing schemes to trick you into sending them money,” South Bruce OPP warn. “They will commonly use the name of a real company in order to gain your trust so that you will send money or personal information to them.”
Provincial Police advise any unsolicited contacts you receive should be verified prior to taking any action, especially transferring money.
