For the second time in just a matter of days, someone fell off a cliff at Eugenia Falls.
Grey Highlands and Blue Mountains firefighters, Provincial Police and Grey County paramedics were called to Eugenia Falls just after 12:30 p.m. on Friday after a 19-year-old male lost his footing and fell some 60 feet down a steep cliff to the slope below.
It took around two hours to successfully rescue the young man. He was transported to a London Hospital by an Ornge air ambulance with serious injuries.
The male teen and his friends were trespassing at the conservation area when the incident happened and passed by a roadway barrier, a locked gate, several no entry signs, warning signs and a barrier wall to access the top of the cliff adjacent to Eugenia Falls, according to the Grey Sauble Conservation Authority.
Eugenia Falls Conservation Area was closed by the Conservation Authority on Tuesday after a young boy who was trying to make his way down to the bottom of the falls fell off a cliff and broke both of his legs. First responders were able to rescue the 11-year-old after spending several hours scaling steep cliffs.
“We were very concerned when we learned of the accident that occurred at Eugenia Falls this past Tuesday”, says Tim Lanthier, Chief Administrative Officer for Grey Sauble Conservation Authority in a statement. “We are already utilizing signage, physical barriers, and OPP patrols to encourage the public to observe safety measures. The incident on Tuesday prompted us to close the property entirely in order to consider other measures that we could implement. When we received the call on Friday about another incident, we were mortified, saddened and very disappointed that people are still not receiving the message”.
Eugenia Falls will remain closed until further notice. The Grey Sauble Conservation Authority advises that OPP have been requested to charge anyone observed trespassing on the property.
