Owen Sound firefighters responded to a blaze late last night at a business in the city's east end.
A fire department official says a call came in about a structure fire at Mellish Appliance Repair on 2nd Avenue East at 8:49 p.m. Thursday night.
Firefighters arrived on scene to find a service van and a shed attached to the building fully engulfed in flames an estimated 40 feet high.
A spokesperson for the fire department says the business was unoccupied at the time. The attached shed that caught fire was being used to store scrap metal.
Numerous reports were received about people hearing an explosion in the area, believed to have been caused by tires blowing up as the van burned.
It took around 30 minutes to contain the blaze. Firefighters managed to stamp out the fire before it spread to the main business structure.
Crews remained on scene until around midnight.
A fire department official says it's believed the fire started in the service van that had been parked unattended since early Thursday afternoon.
It's believed wiring in the van was the source and the fire slowly smouldered throughout the afternoon before erupting late Thursday evening and spreading from the vehicle to the shed.
Fire department officials estimate the total damage to be around $30,000.
