Now that the Deep Geologic Repository (DGR) is off the table for Ontario Power Generation (OPG) in this area, it still leaves unanswered questions for the municipality of Kincardine which hosts storage above-ground.
Kincardine Deputy Mayor Marie Wilson has issued a Notice of Motion, asking OPG to come meet with council to see if there's a clear path going forward.
Wilson says “We always talked about interim management (of the waste) but at what point does it become long-term management?”
Kincardine has been the host community for the waste for the last 40-years and she says international best practices state that hosting agreements “are quite common with municipalities who are managing low and intermediate level waste, over the long term.
Wilson says they need to know what the implications are for the DGR agreement Kincardine has with OPG.
OPG officials will be invited to attend a future council meeting to speak about what's next.
The proposed DGR became a non-issue when Saugeen Ojibway Nation residents voted against such a facility.
OPG was always on record as stating if they didn't get the blessing of First Nations, then they would not consider any DGR plans in the area.
