South Bruce Peninsula Councillor Terry Bell is moving forward with his plan to address the student poverty issue at Peninsula Shores District School in Wiarton.
In mid-December, we told you half of the school population lived at or below the poverty line with little or no food to eat, proper clothing to wear and unable to take part in Bluewater Athletic activities.
Since then, Councillor Bell has presented a Notice of Motion asking council to approve a collaboration between council, staff, educators, students and community stakeholders that will move towards financial initiatives for students.
Bell says they're going to focus on the combo elementary/high school and use the resources that are available to that school, such as service clubs that may want to help.
He wants the students to know that the community cares about them and the issues they are facing.
Bell admits there's no solution that's going to happen overnight but he believes the issues can be solved locally.
Peninsula Shores District School is a JK to Grade 12 facility.
