The Women's House serving Bruce and Grey was before Saugeen Shores Committee of the Whole on January 13th hoping to get financial support to continue their work of assisting women and children in providing a safe haven against domestic or sexual abuse.
51% of Canadian women have experienced at least one incident of sexual or physical abuse.
The statistics are no different for Bruce and Grey Counties.
Fund Development Coordinator Michelle Lamont says domestic and sexual abuse starts with someone who can't control their anger and have a need for power over another person.
The problem knows no boundaries when it comes to age, ethnicity, education or financial status.
Lamont says the Women's House offers in-house safe shelter services and operates crisis phone lines 24/7.
In 2017-18, over 8,600 calls were logged, and almost 800 women and 200 children were served.
Lamont says she didn't ask councillors for any specific amount of money but councillors suggested perhaps $2,500–the same as Kincardine–be considered at the next budget meeting.
She indicates that this year, they'll have to raise close to $200,000 to make up the difference created by operating expenses and what the provincial government funds.
