Owen Sound Police have arrested and charged a 34-year-old Chatsworth man after a robbery at a downtown bank branch.
City police say just before 11:30 a.m. Wednesday a lone male entered a downtown bank with his face concealed by a bandana, glasses and a hood. The man allegedly had a knife and threatened the teller, directing her to quickly place money into a bag.
The suspect then fled the bank with an undisclosed quantity of cash.
Bayshore Broadcasting News has learned the bank was the CIBC location at 2nd Avenue East and 10th Street. Just after 12 p.m., the bank machine lobby was accessible but the main branch was locked and displayed a makeshift “closed until further notice sign”.
Police say numerous investigative techniques were utilized and resulted in the identification of a 34-year-old male from the Chatsworth area as being responsible for the alleged robbery.
At about 2 p.m., officers located and arrested the man on 2nd Avenue East, the same street the alleged robbery happened on a few hours prior.
Police say the accused was found in possession of stolen cash as well as other items used to commit the bank robbery.
They did not say, specifically, if he had a knife on him.
Owen Sound Police say several local businesses provided video surveillance evidence to detectives, which was of great assistance in the identification and apprehension of the suspect.
The 34-year-old man is charged with robbery while armed with an offensive weapon, disguise with intent to commit an indictable offence and possession of proceeds of crime.
He is due to make a bail court appearance on Thursday.
Police have not named the accused as charges have not been sworn before the courts.
