By this Spring, Walkerton's million-dollar soccer field fields will be a lot drier thanks to an 88 thousand dollars Ontario Trillium grant.
The funding will cover the cost to tile two of the four soccer fields in the Bruce Power Regional Soccer Park.
In 2018 it was discovered that all four fields were experiencing drainage issues, as none of the fields were tiled.
The drainage issues resulted in field ruts, settling as well as severe crowning in Pitch 3 and 4.
Some of the sprinkler heads were also protruding from the surface.
The cost to rectify the drainage problems was 158 thousand dollars, and as such Council decided to tackle it in two phases.
In 2019 Brockton spent 70 thousand dollars tiling soccer Pitches 1 and 2.
The 88 thousand dollars in Trillium Grant dollars will cover the cost of tiling Pitches 3 and 4 in 2020.
Mayor Chris Peabody is very pleased with this funding boost, noting that initially the project did not receive much provincial funding.
He says this Trillium Grant is most welcomed as it will cover the entire cost of the remaining two fields.
Work will get underway in the Spring.
The Bruce Power Regional Soccer Fields were completed in 2016 and officially opened in 2017.
