Last month, the Owen Sound Attack blanked the Sudbury Wolves 4-0 with rookie netminder Nick Chenard posting his first Ontario Hockey League shutout.
The question was asked, ‘ was Nick Chenard the youngest Owen Sound goalie to ever record an OHL shutout ? ‘
I asked the question….because I didn’t know the answer.
So with a little time on my hand recently, I was able to pour over some game sheets and match them to birthdates & discover that Nick Chenard was not the youngest Owen Sound goalie to post a shutout in the OHL, in fact he didn’t crack the Top 5.
The distinction of being the youngest Owen Sound netminder with an OHL shutout actually belongs to Chenard’s goaltending partner, Mack Guzda.
On March 11, 2018, Guzda, in his underage season, blanked the Saginaw Spirit 4-0.
Born on January 11, 2001, that meant Guzda was 17 years & 59 days old when he whitewashed the Spirit.
It’s also notable that Guzda is the only underage netminder to turn the trick for Owen Sound- not that we’ve had that many underage netminders in the fold through the years.
If we’re being picky, we could give Guzda credit for sharing a shutout as he completed the final 30 seconds of a 7-0 win over Kitchener earlier that year when starter Olie Lafreniere got injured in the final moment…but that’s weak.
Chronologically, Todd Hunter, Geoff Schnare, Dan LaCosta, Jordan Binnington, Michael McNiven, Mack Guzda, Andrew MacLean & now Nick Chenard all recorded shutouts as 17 year olds.
…….And the answer to who was the youngest to do so is now confirmed; Mack Guzda.
