Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “.
Let’s go into a fairly busy ” Summer ” Weekend with some fastball in the waning stages of the season.
Last night in Chepstow, the annual Bluewater Year End Championship Tournament commenced with the ” Play In ” Game between the Saugeen Thunderbirds and Tara Merchants.
The tournament continues tonight with the survivor from last night joining the top 7 teams in the regular standings for a 3 day playdown.
The Chepstow Aces went 12 & 6 in the regular season to win the pennant, but in tournament play, especially with this tournament, it truly is a whole new ball game.
The Championship Game is Sunday afternoon at 2 pm.
Meanwhile next weekend at Innerkip, the Ontario Challenge Cup Tournament will be contested to determine qualifiers for the 2020 ISC Championship.
Fourteen teams are going to compete at that event including the Wiarton Nationals who get a first round bye.
Also from our region, the Allenford Astros and Dundalk Smoke are in the field and if you go a tiny bit beyond our signal strength, the Arthur Merchants and Victoria Harbour Dodgers are also entered.
Finally, Softball Canada recently announced 15 players selected for the 2019 U17 Junior Mens National Team, a large number of whom were at the Under 19 Championship last month at Duncan McLellan Park.
Matthew Weiler from Hepworth and Durham’s Owen Rahn are among the 15 players who will compete at the 2019 WBSC Americas U17 Mens Softball Qualifier November 1st-10th in Guatemala.
Other familiar names from the Softball Canada Tournament & list include Mason McKay & Jackson Pegelo along with Connor Brooks, Brock Fencott, Andrew VanBoekel and Reese Yantzi
Have a great weekend.
I’m Fred Wallace
