Have you ever been so certain of something that, just for good measure, you actually checked it out ?
Such was the case with a project that’s been in my head for years; a comparison study between the winning percentage for the Owen Sound OHL team at home on Wednesday nights as opposed to Saturday nights.
I knew the Platers and Attack had a vastly better winning percentage on Saturday night home games than Wednesdays- I just knew it.
And as I tabulated the wins, losses, ties, overtime and shootout losses for every home game played at the Bayshore since September 20th, 1989, I felt justified finding just 7 years in which the Wednesday success ratio was better than the Saturday.
Furthermore, in single year samples, six times the Saturday winning percentage was more than 20 percent higher than Wednesdays in the same year. Basically, the same team, same kids, same ice surface, yet a 20 percent difference in performance from Wednesdays up to Saturdays.
BUT, when I crunched the final numbers for every regular season home game played on a Wednesday or a Saturday over 27 years, I was stunned by the results.
Owen Sound has garnered 266 of a possible 482 points on Wednesday night home games through their history. That’s a winning percentage…a POOR winning percentage…of just 55 %.
By comparison, the winning percentage on home ice for Saturday home games dating back to 1989 was……61 %, ….only 5 percentage points higher that Wednesdays.
‘ This can’t be ‘, I thought.
I double checked, triple checked, cleaned my glasses, slept on it, tried it again, and still Owen Sound accumulated 693 points out of a possible 1,120 on Saturday night games, equalling 61 percent success.
I thought I knew something…now I know something totally different.
