Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire ” brought to you by your local Auto Logic……the Logical Choice.
Somewhat by accident, I ended up at Victoria Park on Monday afternoon and watched the second half of the Bluewater Girls Rugby Championship between the St Mary’s Mustangs and the West Hill Lady Raiders.
The Mustangs had just taken a 10-7 lead as I arrived and later, with a valiant goal line stand in the final moments, were able to hang on and claim the 2016 Championship over their city rivals.
The image of rugby I had, was one of artistic laterals to the outside where a lengthy mad dash to the end zone led to the scoring tries.
This was not the case for the Lady Mustangs and Raiders who impressively and aggressively engaged in trench warfare, each hoping to gain an inch here, a foot there, with only the odd breakout run.
Make no mistake, while not vicious nor brutal, the Bluewater Girls Final was rugged and there was precious little to choose between the two sides when I was watching, certainly little to choose between who wanted it more.
And the neat thing is the Mustangs and Raiders get to do it again , maybe even against each other, as the CWOSSA Girls Rugby Playdown is set for the Tiverton Sports Complex on Friday, with the CWOSSA Championship Final at Victoria Park in Owen Sound Tuesday ( maybe ).
I’m Fred Wallace
