Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire ” brought to you by your local Auto Logic…the Logical Choice.
It’s March Break which means no activity for Bluewater athletes which might be a good thing after several major OFSAA events last week.
Over the course of last week, I got a nice note from Murray Kuntz, the Principal at St Mary’s High School, thanking the radio station for the focus on high school, athletes.
In his view, a simple mention or an on air moment spotlighting the athlete or the school team is very meaningful.
All of which reminded me of something from the late 70’s.
The Midland Bantams won the OMHA Championship in the Spring of 1978, defeating Saltfleet by winning the deciding game 4-3 on a late goal by Paul Hahn.
Following the game, and throughout the morning show on 1230 CKMP the next day, all you heard was the triumph for the team and Paul Hahn’s goal.
By happenstance the morning after, I encountered ” Pudgy ” Hahn on his walk into high school and while I didn’t say a word to him, it was pretty obvious he was in a happy world all of his own, to a certain extent thanks to the exposure he and the Bantams were getting that morning.
I’ve known this for a long time, but the quick e-mail from Murray Kuntz at St Mary’s confirmed, almost 40 years later, how powerful, how positively impactful local radio can be for community sports and for the community at large.
I’m Fred Wallace
