Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire. “
The climax to the World Junior Hockey Championship on Tuesday afternoon was spectacular.
The Russians led 1-0 on a power play. The Finns tied it early in the 3rd.
The Russians led 2-1 and had a dominant cycle shift with about 10 minutes to go. Still the Finns took advantage of a crashing Aleksander Mikulovich to tie the game at 2 shortly thereafter.
Then on a power play with 2 minutes to go, the Finns took their first lead, but the Russians rallied with their net empty to send the game to overtime with a goal with 6 seconds remaining.
Overtime lasted 90 seconds when Kasperi Kapanen finished a wrap around for the Finns for the Gold Medal win.
Yes, I wanted the Russians and Attack defender Damir Sharipzyanov to win the Gold, but in the passage of time since that game, you’ve got to admit that Finland-Russia was a tremendous championship game and sets the stage nicely for 2017 in Toronto and Montreal.
I’m Fred Wallace
