Hi this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire ” brought to you by Auto Logic, the Logical Choice.
The Battle of Alberta could be applied to any activity that pits Calgary against Edmonton, historically or in contemporary sports.
However, with apologies to the CFL Stampeders and Eskimos, it’s the hockey version between the Flames and Oilers that gets the most play.
Mark Spector has authored a book titled ” The Battle of Alberta ” and in a recent chat we got talking about then and now.
My lingering image of the ” battle ” was an early piece on TSN, then in its infancy, where NHL players were asked who the toughest opponent was.
Joel Otto of the Flames said, ” Mark Messier. “
Mark Messier of the Oilers said, ” Joel Otto. “
And while there obviously was respect between the two, players and clubs, there was also so much competitive animosity that it fueled the rivalry at what I felt was its peak; 1983-89.
So was Calgary-Edmonton better in the 80’s ?
Or does today’s speed and skill level in the NHL make for better hockey and better entertainment ?
Do you need a Stanley Cup Playoff meeting between the clubs to regain what maybe once was ?
Mark Spector examines every angle of Calgary-Edmonton in his book, ” The Battle of Alberta. “
I’m Fred Wallace
