Game 3 of the World Series goes tonight and before the first pitch at Citi Field, Billy Joel is lined up to lead the crowd with the ” Star Spangled Banner “.
That’s cool on so many levels.
For me, I discovered Major League Baseball around 1969.
I discovered Billy Joel 4 years later.
Given the option of attending a World Series Game or a Billy Joel concert, I’d likely take the ball game, but only because I’ve seen Billy Joel at his best, November 17th, 1979.
It’s cool too because I keep running the baseball lyrics from ” Zanzibar ” through my head.

Finally, having Billy Joel do the anthem for the Mets maintains an ongoing connection that dates back to the 2000 World Series.
The Mets use “Piano Man” as a sing-along in the 8th inning break, and sometimes they’ve played “New York State of Mind” after a Citi Field win.
