Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire ” brought to you by Auto Logic, the Logical Choice. “
Last weekend was a BIG one for the Municipality of Meaford.
The Scarecrow Invasion & Family Festival complete with parade and the awarding of ” Patches ” for the best display were conducted on Friday.
Then the following day, the Coyotes held their 5th annual cross country race under what could best be described as ” blustery conditions. “
The most exciting race was in the Grade 7 & 8 Boys 3K where Peter Ruest from Meaford Community School managed to barely bypass Nolan Smith of Beaver Valley in a sprint to the line to win the contest.
Equally impressive was a tactical race run by Jessie Byers of the Saugeen Track & Field Club as she patiently sat in the leaders pocket until the final kilometre of the Grade 7 & 8 Girls race.
And maybe more impressive than the winning performances in the 8 divisions, was the reach for the competition.
Obviously, this is a huge event for the Coyotes Club and for the young runners from Meaford’s elementary schools. You expect those participants to be on hand.
But the 2015 race had competitors from well beyond the municipal borders, stretching to the West into Bruce County and to the Southeast as far as Moonstone.
So, as Year 5 concludes and a date is booked for 2016, one wonders how far the reach can expand and how much larger the field of 400 runners at the Coyote Race can be further cultivated.
I’m Fred Wallace
