Hi, this is Fred Wallace with Off the Wire, brought to you by Auto Logic, the Logical Choice
Will a Canadian golfer ever win the Canadian Open ?
David Hearn of Brantford came very close this year, leading after 3 rounds at Glen Abbey.
Unfortunately for Hearn, he played par golf in the final round which was good, but not good enough to hold the lead and he had to settle for 3rd place overall.
Gracious in defeat, Hearn stated afterwards he was exceptionally proud to be from Canada and represent the country at the Open and he’s convinced a Canadian one day will win the event, pointing to the rising number of quality pros in the sport from our country.
Call me a cynic, but I’m a little more sceptical that I’ll ever see a Canadian win the event.
Since Pat Fletcher more then 60 years ago, no one from Canada has won the tournament.
We know this too well- we’re reminded of it year after year after year…….
Yes, David Hearn and Mike Weir have both come very close, but 2 close calls in 6 decades doesn’t suggest a National triumph at the Canadian Open is on the near horizon, if ever.
I’m Fred Wallace
