Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire ” brought to you by Auto Logic, the Logical Choice.
The Owen Sound Attack formally announced their coaching additions yesterday, naming Ryan McGill as their new head coach and Derek King as an assistant coach.
The two former NHL’ers will step into the vacancy created by a massive sequence of departures from Owen Sound in the off season which included Head Coach Greg Ireland going to Germany and assistant coach Drew Bannister landing in Sault Ste Marie.
Speaking with McGill yesterday, he admitted he was excited to be coming to Owen Sound to work with Attack General Manager Dale DeGray and coach in what he understands is a vibrant Junior Hockey market.
McGill doesn’t know a lot about the Attack and he’s comfortable with that and certainly isn’t bothered by a relatively short span of a month between the announcement and Rookie Camp.
Having been an assistant in the NHL at Calgary, I wondered if this wasn’t part of a coaching progression path where you sometime have to take a step back to take a step ahead.
McGill didn’t buy that thesis at all, relating coaching in the Canadian Hockey League is definitely not a step back.
So Ryan McGill and Derek King, plus scout Sean Lafortune are in and a new era of Attack Hockey in Owen Sound commences.
I’m Fred Wallace
