Hi this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Auto Logic…..the Logical Choice !
I can’t say that I fully understand this, but the connection between Alpine Canada & Owen Sound skier Larisa Yurkiw is far more twisted than any slalom run.
Recently, Yurkiw was formally announced as a member of Alpine Canada’s team for the 2015-16 World Cup season.
While certainly grateful, and honoured to be included, the reality for Yurkiw was that she earned that inclusion on the basis of her season last year, which was highlighted by a 2nd place finish at a January race in Italy & a 10th place finish overall in the downhill.
But concurrent with Yurkiw’s successful performances on the slopes, is an equally impressive run in the business world in which she has funded her last two years of competition.
Team Larisa as it’s known, was a forced action on her part, created two years ago when Alpine Canada deemed Yurkiw’s results weren’t acceptable and essentially she was dropped from the program.
Not ready to quit, Yurkiw hit the streets to raise funds to allow her to keep skiing at the elite level, and now, in light of the Alpine Canada announcement, Yurkiw stresses she will remain as a independent operator, not out of spite, but rather because it’s a vastly better business decision.
Complex, for sure, but still a remarkable triumph for a local skier far from the slopes.
I’m Fred Wallace
