Hi this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Auto Logic…..the Logical Choice !
The best hockey story I know this year unfolded right before eyes, and, hopefully, has additional legs.
Up until Christmas, the CUPE Local 443 Penguins of the Owen Sound Novice House League didn’t win a game. Not once.
Still, week after week, a dozen smiling faces showed up, played hard and had as much fun as you can possibly have on a 2 & 1/2 month losing streak.
The streak changed directions just after Christmas when the Penguins, led by the healthy tonsils of 7 year old Brooke Thomas, won the Cheer Like Never Before Contest as part of Rogers Hometown Hockey.
With the subtle taste of achievement, the Penguins got tougher and tougher to beat, advancing in storybook fashion to the Championship Game before losing that game 2-1 in overtime
Geez, I was proud of them.
Regardless, the Penguins season is still alive as they are 1 of 25 teams in the final round of ” Cheer Like Never Before “
If they win this Internet-based voting contest, the Penguins will be transported to Toronto, stay 2 nights in a hotel, meet some Leafs, meet some alumni, and be rewarded additionally by Bauer Hockey.
Unbelievable.
So heading into Easter Weekend, I’d like to ask our audience to please assist the CUPE Penguins by casting a computer vote daily @ Hometownhockey.com/cheer.
Have a great weekend. Happy Easter.
I’m Fred Wallace
