Hi this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Auto Logic…..the Logical Choice !
Today is a special day, the day after the regular season in the Ontario Hockey League, the day when the season, in theory, begins anew for the 16 playoff qualifiers.
Sure, it’s highly unlikely that Sault Ste Marie, Oshawa and Erie will get gassed in the first round, but the potential is always there, which makes today special
Today is also a special day as it clarifies a very heated argument in Owen Sound as to where the Attack will draft in the OHL Priority Selection on April 11th.
The Attack will get two first round selections, but the debate has centered on exactly where the first one would fall.
You see, Owen Sound is owed a compensation pick thanks to the reluctant Victor Mete who was selected 8th overall but managed to wrangle a trade to London before the season in exchange for 6 picks plus the compensation pick.
The Compensation pick is to be one pick later, the year after the player was deemed as ” defected “
Mete was chosen 8th in 2014, therefore Owen Sound should get the 9th pick in the 2015 Priority Selection.
Simple, right ?
Well, Niagara had a similar scenario in 2014 with Logan Brown who was selected 6th overall last year, but was dealt to Windsor when he failed to report, meaning the IceDogs will get the # 7 selection in April.
Everyone agreed on picks 1 through 7, but did the Niagara compensation pick bump everyone back one position and mean the Attack would pick 10th ?
Finally, after weeks of debate, the OHL confirmed on FRIDAY, that the Attack are in at # 9
I’m Fred Wallace
