Hi this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Auto Logic…..the Logical Choice !
Today Bayshore Broadcasting is staging a special in-house celebration to commemorate the 75th anniversary of radio station 560 CFOS.
Going on air, March 1st, 1940, I got wondering in the leadup to the milestone anniversary what would be the most significant sports moment covered by the station live or reported on from afar.
I’d assume the earliest pieces of information would have been the announcement that Owen Sound teenager Harry Lumley was suiting up for National Hockey League games in 1943.
Having heard some audio and having spoken to the late Bill Dane, it easy to imagine the years 1950 & 51 were truly specials with the Crescents winning the Mann Cup in lacrosse followed by the Mercury’s winning the Allan Cup in Hockey.
” Happy days, indeed “, is the way Bill Dane put it.
Lacrosse must have been front & center with Ed Eldred at the mic in 1979 & 1980 when the Senior NorthStars captured the Presidents Cup in lacrosse.
For me, I started in sports in the Spring of 1988, and just 1 year later, the NorthStars won the Presidents Cup in Nanaimo & the Canadian Tiremen won the Canadian Fastball Championship at St John’s, Newfoundland.
Of course, you know that if I had just one vote, I’d select Jarrod Maidens OHL Championship winning goal for the Attack on Sunday May 15, 2011…..but that’s my perspective.
And truthfully, the most significant sports news in the history of the company & station, may not have occurred yet.
It might take place today, or tomorrow, or soon.
I mean we’re only 75 years old, and there are many special days & years ahead of us.
Happy 75th Anniversary CFOS & Bayshore Broadcasting.
I’m Fred Wallace
