Last week was an encouraging week for athletes from our region, athletes who compete somewhat out of the mainstream, far removed from the spotlight.
Going back to January 10th in the wild winter conditions at Highlands Nordic in Duntroon, Julian Smith won the ” A ” Final for the 1.7 kilometre sprint at the World Junior Nordic Trials.
That victory allowed Smith to gain a berth on Canada’s entry at the World Junior Nordic Championship next month in Kazakhstan.
In another sequence, David Askwith out of Georgian Bay Nordic was selected for the Ontario entry in cross country skiing at the Canada Winter Games in BC.
Meanwhile in Listowel, Jordan Caskenette is playing Junior B Hockey for the Cyclones hoping to make an impression on the Kitchener Rangers and make the jump next year to the Ontario Hockey League.
On his way to a game in Brampton, Caskenette got a series of messages informing him he’s been selected third overall in the Ontario LACROSSE Junior A draft by the Barrie Lakeshores.
Caskenette admits he’s excited about the upcoming Junior B Hockey playoffs next month, but also concedes the high draft selection has him primed for lacrosse season, which may intersect the hockey season.
