Zach Nastasiuk scored twice in sequence one night for the Owen Sound Attack and we got talking in the Sound Booth about natural hat tricks.
I really couldn’t recall one off the top of my head, so with nothing better to do that night, I looked it up.
Here’s what I found……………………………….
First, I discovered my memory stinks.
My good friend Jeff Perry was the first to do it in just the THIRD game in Owen Sound history, a 4-0 win at Sudbury.
If I had to guess, if you had to guess, we probably all would have guessed that Wes Goldie and Joshua Bailey did it when they had record setting 5 goal games.
And we would have been right.
Bailey’s 5 goal effort at Erie in 2006 is the only time an Owen Sound player has scored 4 straight goals for the club.
Bobby Ryan would be a easy guess too. He did it twice.
Interestingly, with all the goals Andrew Brunette, Jim Brown and Jason MacDonald scored in the 90’s, none of those 3 had a natural hat trick, in fact in many cases, they interrupted the respective streak the scorer was on. Same for Joey Hishon one night.
Adam Mair had a 3 straight night in February of 1999
Plus, Derek Campbell & Mike Angelidis had 4 goal games that included 3 straight Owen Sound markers.
The Angelidis foursome in March of 2006 against Guelph included his 50th goal of the season
The last natural hat trick was almost a year ago; November 14th at Peterborough turned in by Gemel Smith
And finally, can you guess who scored the fastest natural hat trick in Owen Sound franchise history ?
I had to look it up.
The answer; Josh Moes in a 6-5 loss to Erie in January of 2009.
Moes scored 3 straight in 10 minutes & 31 seconds.
& Josh Moes also has the distinction of being the ONLY Owen Sound player to ever record a natural hat trick in a losing cause.
Fascinating stuff, all touched off by a recent two goal outburst from Zach Nastasiuk
