In the middle of October, we’re in the middle of the baseball playoffs.
Last night in the American League Championship series the Royals shaded Baltimore 2-1, giving the Wild Card Royals a commanding 3-0 series lead.
They could wrap it up this afternoon
Meanwhile, earlier yesterday in Game 3 of the National League Championship, the Giants scored the winning run on a wild throw in the 10th to take a 2-1 series lead over St Louis
San Francisco will host Game 4 at 8 pm tonight.
The success of both the Royals & the Giants gives a great deal of credence to the Wild Card format.
Kansas City & San Francisco claimed one of the 2 berths in their respective leagues and then followed with an elimination game victory to make the final 4.
The Royals then swept the Angels while the Giants needed 4 games to dispose of Washington.
And while the format has generated more excitement & more twists; truthfully I liked playoff baseball better decades ago.
A 3 out of 5 League Championship.
A best of 7 World Series.
Dates that were actually conducive to baseball rather than Halloween.
Afternoon games.
Games that concluded before bedtime & didn’t take forever to complete. Even the players are complaining abut 4 hour games.
Baseball remains a great spectator sport, but unfortunately, I’m relegated to reading about it the day after rather than watching the action unfold.
