I’ve been told that fastball is a dying sport.
Of course, I was told that in 1988, and while there have been up years and down years, the sport motors along 25 years later, certainly in our region.
As an example, maybe the best example, the Bluewater Fastball League will stage their 8 team Year-End tournament this weekend in Chepstow.
Play starts tomorrow night with 2 games at 7 pm and two more at 9, meaning all 8 entries see action on the opening night.
Who’s the favorite ?
That depends on who you ask.
The consensus around the league is the regular season champion Owen Sound Selects & the Mildmay Mets are the frontrunners because those teams have the most pitching depth.
But who’s ready to rule out Wiarton or perennial contender Port Elgin, or……………….. ? It should be a good weekend in Chepstow.
The Bluewater League Championship Tournament comes on the heels of a very competitive Owen Sound Men’s League Playoff tournament which was captured by the Williamsford Woodsmen.
Plus, the Bluewater & Owen Sound playoffs also set the stage for what appears to be an active 2015.
The Showdown in the Sound reportedly is returning, while the Selects organization has designs on hosting two major tournament events.
Fastball may be dead or dying- in some parts, but around here, the sport is still kicking and swinging for the fences
