I know I’m a dozen days away from being current, but the World Lacrosse Championship in Colorado deserves a moment.
I doubt anyone connected to lacrosse in any form missed Canada winning the Gold medal, beating the Americans 8-5 in the Championship Game.
And in these parts, it’s well known that Owen Sound’s Adam Jones was a key member of the Gold Medal winning Canadians.
I delayed any comment until I spoke to Adam about the triumph and I’m glad that I did.
The victory was a victory on so many levels.
First, Jones and Canada won the Gold
Two, Canada defeated the United States to capture that Gold and it’s a rare field lacrosse event that the USA suffers defeat.
Three, Jones, who can never be accused of self-promotion, was happy with his contribution, especially after an early loss and the Canadian positions were re-jigged.
Four, the Championship is sweet for the Jones Family. In 1978, Brian Jones was on the Gold Medal team. 36 years later his son captured Gold.
Keep in mind, the World Lacrosse Championship is like the Olympics, once every 4 years, so for a Canadian father & son duo to have titles is quite an achievement.
And finally, interestingly, Adam Jones was quite enthused about the elevation of play in the 38 country tournament, as many countries beyond North America had very good showings and the sport could grow as a result.
The Canadian Field Lacrosse Gold Medal Championship might be considered ” old news ” almost two weeks later, but the conversation with Gold Medallist Adam Jones of Owen Sound was a very fresh take on the title.
