Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Hal Wright Chevrolet-Cadillac-GMC-Buick on the Sunset Strip in Owen Sound.
When the clock strikes 12 tonight, anglers will start their motors and fishing will commence in the 31st annual CFPS Chantry Chinook Classic.
The long time derby conducted by the Lake Huron Fishing Club will run from 1 minute after midnight until noon on August 10th.
The expanded 16 day format also has expanded boundaries, stretching along the Lake Huron shoreline, around the Bruce Peninsula and down the Georgian Bay shoreline to Wiarton.
More time and more space equals more opportunity to land the largest salmon or trout.
The cash prize for the heaviest salmon is a hefty sum of $ 14,000 this year, while the heaviest trout will garner the winning angler $ 6,000.
Salmon & Trout are near and dear to the operators of the derby
The Lake Huron Fishing Club operates a rainbow & brown trout hatchery at Kincardine plus a salmon hatchery in Port Elgin, and all proceeds from the Chantry Chinook go to the club’s conservation projects, primarily those hatcheries
Derby organizers anticipate more than 1,200 anglers will participate this year with the heaviest salmon being projected to be in the neighborhood of 20-23 pounds.
Good luck to everyone competing in the 31st annual Chantry Chinook Classic
I’m Fred Wallace
