Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Hal Wright Chevrolet-Cadillac-GMC-Buick on the Sunset Strip in Owen Sound.
The first word I ever heard associated with Owen Sound Attack netminding prospect Michael McNiven was….” raw “.
But the word, ” raw “, was said with a sense of excitement.
McNiven who had been selected 66th in the 2013 OHL Priority Selection, took a good run at being Brandon Hope’s backup last year in Owen Sound, but the organization decided it would beneficial for all if McNiven went back to Georgetown and played for the Junior A Raiders.
Through 35 appearances, McNiven posted exceptional numbers including 5 shutouts and a save percentage well above 90, all which garnered attention near & far.
Among those attracted was Hockey Canada who invited McNiven to participate at the Program of Excellence Goaltending camp in Calgary earlier this month.
Speaking afterwards, McNiven says he thoroughly enjoyed the experience, had his eyes opened to a variety of techniques & concepts and believes he’s in contention for a call-back for a final 4 spot in his age category.
What also stuck was Hockey Canada’s assessment that McNiven was too heavy, out of shape and would be better served as a 190 pounder, meaning he’d have to shed 15 to 20 pounds.
McNiven relates he’s comfortable with his playing weight, but if dropping pounds means he’s a faster, stronger, better goaltender, potentially for the Attack, potentially for a Hockey Canada assignment, potentially for the 2015 NHL Draft, he’s ready to work at it.
I’m Fred Wallace
