Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Hal Wright Chevrolet-Cadillac-GMC-Buick on the Sunset Strip in Owen Sound.
Earlier this week, we were talking about Adam Jones and the opportunity he has to represent Canada at the World Lacrosse Championship in Denver in July.
Amazingly, at the exact same time in Whitehorse, another Owen Sound athlete will be on a Canadian entry in his sport, fastball.
Pitcher Matt Wardrop is one of a handful of pitchers selected by Softball Canada for the tournament which runs in the Yukon from July 10th to 20th.
Truthfully, Wardrop will depart a week or so earlier as the Canadian team will meet in British Columbia and face a variety of teams out West before the tournament starts.
On an apples to apples basis, this tournament is the fastball equivalent of the World Junior Hockey Tournament and for Wardrop to work his way to the upper end of the Canadian pitching staff, he expects to be a top 2 starter, is significant.
To prepare for the ISF Junior event, Wardrop is pitching a lot !
He plays OASA Midget at Teeswater, pitches for the Owen Sound Junior Selects &, when time permits, he also throws for the Harold Sutherland squad in the Owen Sound Men’s League.
But come early July, Matt Wardrop will pitch for just one team, Canada, at the ISF World Juniors
I’m Fred Wallace
