Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Hal Wright Chevrolet-Cadillac-GMC-Buick on the Sunset Strip in Owen Sound.
As April unfolds, the number of hockey teams still in competition diminishes.
Whether it’s the OHL, Junior C or Senior Hockey, we’re down to the nitty gritty.
Of note last week, the West Hill Lady Raiders won the Bluewater Girls Hockey Championship, scoring a back and forth 6-5 win over the Sacred Heart Crusaders at Walkerton.
Ashlee Lawrence had a huge game for West Hill, picking up a point on all 6 West Hill markers and for good measure she sunk the game winner with 12 seconds to go.
Speaking with Dave Johnson, coach of the Lady Crusaders, it’s obvious Girls Hockey is enjoying a healthy level of participation.
Furthermore, the teams from Bluewater that advance to CWOSSA and if lucky, on to OFSAA, are acquitting themselves well at the next level.
The challenge going forward for Bluewater teams at the next level, is that they are encountering ” specialty schools ” or schools that have a built in hockey program as part of their curriculum.
Could such a school or program be developed in Grey-Bruce ?
It’s a thought, but for the moment, the current scenario seems to be producing some pretty good hockey in the Bluewater Girls Division.
I’m Fred Wallace
