Recently on a trip to Midland, my mother presented me with my Grade 6 class picture.
Mr Marr, 1971-72, Huron Park Public School.
Mr Marr often said, ” 90 percent of what you remember in life are the good things. “
As I glanced from face to face, I realized Mr Marr was right. The mostly positive moments, memories and images came rolling back.
I was quite proud that of the 36 kids in that picture, I could name, without any hesitation, 35 of them.
However, I have no idea who # 36 is, a girl sitting in the front row, and it’s been a frequent thought ever since; ‘ who was she ? ‘
The desire to find the girl’s identity was somewhat heightened in the last week after an interview with Yolanda Cameron regarding the Wes For Youth Online.ca Hockey Tournament.
The 2nd annual Wes for Youth event at Walkerton-Mildmay & Hanover was a smashing success from every regard with 8 boys & 8 girls teams participating, not for championship glory, but rather to promote awareness of positive mental health for teenagers.
In 1971-72, based on the picture, I had no idea who classmate # 36 was.
Then, based on my interview with Yolanda Cameron, I wondered, then looked again at the picture, curious regarding how much I actually knew about the people I was spending 7 hours a day with, 5 days a week.
Who were they ?
What were they about ?
What challenges did they face ?
And the answers after re-examination indicate I knew very little about my classmates, then or now, which to a large extent heightens the significance & importance of the Wes For Youth Online.ca Hockey Tournament and similar programs for school aged youngsters.
I’m Fred Wallace
