Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Hal Wright Chevrolet-Cadillac-GMC-Buick on the Sunset Strip in Owen Sound.
Here we are, a day & a bit away from the New Year, and like many in the audience, we look back at the year-almost-gone-by and assess where we were, what we did and the moments that stood out.
From a local sporting standpoint, there’s no question that the best of the best this year was the semifinal game at the Canadian Junior Men’s Fastball Championship Tournament, hosted by the Keady Jets at Duncan McLellan Park in Owen Sound.
A full week of round robin competition that produced 3 to 4 exceptional games every day led to the playoff round and a terrific semifinal match between the Wiarton Red Devils & Kelly’s Pub representing Newfoundland & Labrador.
It was heartening to see a terrific crowd on hand for an exceptional game that went to extra innings before the Red Devils won it in extra innings.
Motivated by that victory, the Red Devils stayed on the diamond and smoked Napanee to win the 2013 Championship culminating years of growth where the group essentially grew from humble beginnings as the Sauble Seagulls Peewee team into National Junior Champions over the course of a a half decade.
For me, that Sunday in August at Duncan McLellan Park & the National Championship for the Wiarton Red Devils was the best of the best for 2013.
I’m Fred Wallace
