These are interesting times for lacrosse in Owen Sound; good and bad.
The positive news comes from the recent Ontario Lacrosse Association Convention where city resident Sharon McKechnie was honoured with the Thomas ” Tip ” Teather Award.
The Tip Teather Award, somewhat ironically known as the ” Mr Lacrosse ” award, is presented to the person making an outstanding contribution to the sport of lacrosse.
McKechnie is only the third lady to win the award from the OLA, and the first Owen Sounder since George Watson in the late 90’s.
When asked about the highlight of her more than 2 decades of involvement in the sport, Sharon McKechnie quickly cites the people she’s met and grown to know in the game.
In another irony, it’s a lack of people that may hinder the operation of certain programs from Owen Sound Minor Lacrosse.
In a note from President Dan Hyland, it’s noted that the annual General Meeting left the executive structure at bare bones, with almost a half dozen vacant positions.
As such, the 2014 Minor Lacrosse program in Owen Sound may be significantly cut, which after decades of building would be a shame to see.
Anyone interested in assisting at the executive level is asked to call Dan Hyland at 519-372-9928.
So as we approach mid-November, we have great news and concerning news for city lacrosse.
I’m Fred Wallace
