The Owen Sound Minor Hockey Group’s Early Bird Tournament was staged over the weekend with more than 30 teams competing in 5 different age groups.
Interestingly, every championship final featured a team from Owen Sound, or from the region.
I know I’m stretching a bit here, but the championship wins by the Saugeen Shores Atoms and by the Collingwood Peewees made it a highly successful tournament for local entries.
Owen Sound Minor Hockey had 3 teams advance to their respective finals.
The lone team to lose were the Gaviller & Company Bantams who were blanked 1-0 by Dorchester.
In an irony, Gaviller and Company scored in the first 3 minutes of the game, but the deflection was ruled a ” high stick ” and they never scored again.
A lot of off season talk centered on the Crescent Club Midgets and the Attack lived up to the billing coming through with a 5-2 win over the Mount Brydges Cougars in the Final.
The other championship team was the Canadian Tire Novice who blanked Burlington 3-0 to win the Novice Championship.
There was much gratification for the Owen Sound Minor Hockey Group with that victory as the Canadian Tire squad represent the first graduates of relatively new ” Ice Magic ” program.
” Ice Magic ” has created more ice time and enhanced instruction time for young newcomers to Owen Sound Minor Hockey, and the belief is that it’s more than a coincidence that the Canadian Tire team found success.
I’m Fred Wallace
