There are 18 days remaining in the 2013 Major League Baseball season and at the top, MLB has to be thrilled with the depth of teams that have a shot at the post season with just over 2 weeks remaining.
By my count, 8 teams in the American League are in the hunt as of today and while the 5 playoff qualifying teams in the National League are virtually set, there’s still some exciting possibilities in the Central Division.
St Louis, Pittsburgh & Cincinnati are all in contention to win the NL Central and more than likely those three will join the Dodgers and Braves in the post season dance.
Meanwhile in the American League it’s more complex.
Boston leads the East and barring a collapse, should enter as a divisional champion.
Detroit and Oakland have divisional leads but there’s not a great deal of distance in the rear view mirror.
Cleveland is trying to catch the Tigers in the Central while the A’s and Texas have played musical chairs all season long for the West lead.
Tampa Bay has possession of a wildcard,……….BUT, they’re going to be threatened by the Indians, Baltimore, the New York Yankees & Kansas City..
With 18 dates to go, 13 teams, almost half of the big leagues are in contention to play in October.
The Toronto Blue Jays who won the 2013 World Series LAST November but are now hopelessly out of it, host the Angels at the Rogers Centre.
I’m Fred Wallace
