Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Hal Wright Chevrolet-Cadillac-GMC-Buick on the Sunset Strip in Owen Sound.
This is the 25th year of Ontario Hockey League action in Owen Sound.
Through the course of the year ahead, we’ll drift back into the past and remember the games, the players, the moments that have contributed significantly to the community makeup of the city and region through the hockey club.
The first such moment was the climax of a marvellous playoff series between the Platers and the Sudbury Wolves in March of 1990.
The Wolves finished ahead of the Attack in the regular season, yet Owen Sound walked into Sudbury and won the opener 8-7, riding a hat trick by Owen Lessard.
The Wolves then won the next three in a row; 3-2 in Owen Sound, 4-2 at Sudbury and then 5-4 at the Bayshore in overtime on a game winner by Sean O’Donnell who would go on to have an exceptionally long NHL career.
That left the Platers with the task of winning 3 games in 3 nights, two of which were in Sudbury, IF the Platers were to advance.
Jeff Perry had a 2 goal game in Game 5 at Sudbury, a convincing 5-1 win.
The next night back in Owen Sound, the Platers tied the series with a 3-2 win to force Game 7.
And then on Wednesday March 28th, Sudbury had 2 goals waved off in overtime before Jeff Perry’s dump in from just inside center fooled David Goverde in the Sudbury goal to give Owen Sound a stunning 7 game series win.
This is the 25th year of OHL Hockey in Owen Sound
I’m Fred Wallace
