This may happen to everybody at a certain stage in life, but I find it interesting when looking back that almost every job I’ve ever had no longer exists.
Camp Manitomono on the Sturgeon River, sadly, was a vacant & vandalized shambles the last time I saw it.
Jack Parr’s SuperSave closed its doors in 1980.
My first radio station, 1230 CKMP, Midland ceased operations decades ago.
Even the first job I had, paperboy for the Midland Free Press, no longer exists.
The closing of the Free Press by Sun Media in June was a sign of the times.
From a business perspective- they weren’t profitable, and in the eyes of the corporation, it had to close.
It was also a sign of contemporary times; readers and clients have flocked to the Internet for quicker access to information and cheaper advertising rates.
Again, it could be a sign of being lost in the past on my part, but I found the situation regrettable.
I’m not that old, that I’ve forgotten what it was like to discover local news in black & white, or better yet, the rush you’d get when your name or your picture was found in the bi-weekly Midland Free Press.
I’m Fred Wallace
