Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Hal Wright Chevrolet-Cadillac-GMC-Buick on the Sunset Strip in Owen Sound.
By this time next week, the Canadian Junior Fastball Championship Tournament will commence at Duncan McLellan Park in Owen Sound.
Speaking to Wiarton Red Devils Manager Mark Hooey recently, he deflected any suggestion on my part that the Wiarton squad is the team to beat.
And why not ?
The Red Devils won the O.A.S.A. Junior Elimination Tournament last month in Owen Sound, running the table with a perfect mark of 4 & 0.
Following the tournament, Wiarton bolstered their lineup by adding 3 members of the eliminated Owen Sound Selects; infielder Austin Brown, catcher Ben Heinbuch & most significantly pitcher Michael Lagace-Roote.
Roote, along with Ty Sebastian and Travis Jones were key members for the Ontario Under 21 entry that won the International Tournament in Saskatoon this month.
And Hooey has an unbelievable deep pitching rotation for the tournament with Andy Barber, Jones, Sebastian & Lagace-Roote all ready to go.
After all of that, Manager Mark Hooey claims the Kelly’s Pub Canadians from Newfoundland & Labrador are the team to beat.
We’ll see.
I’m Fred Wallace
