It’s a curious scenario from the initial view.
In the York Region Soccer League’s Premier Division, Collingwood United has lost one game. Owen Sound Grey Motors United have also lost just one game. But the difference in points in the standings between the two clubs is staggering with Collingwood at 30 points, far and away ahead of Grey Motors who have 17.
Upon closer inspection, the number of ties for Grey Motors is the biggest factor.
While Collingwood is 10 & 1 on the season, Grey Motors has 4 wins and 5 ties plus the lone defeat.
Most significantly, the lone setback for Grey Motors was last Friday. At Collingwood. By a 4-2 count.
What’s disconcerting for Grey Motors is that they had a 2-1 lead Friday night at Fisher Field but couldn’t seal the deal, allowing the Collingwood side to score 3 unanswered and post a 4-2 victory in what was described as a spirited game.
With 8 games remaining in their regular season, Grey Motors would need to go on a tremendous roll, AND Collingwood would almost have to fall apart in order for Owen Sound to bypass the current league leaders for first place.
As unlikely as that scenario seems, Grey Motors United gets a chance to take the first step and a chance to avenge Friday’s loss tonight when they host Collingwood at 8:45 tonight at the Kiwanis Soccer Complex.
