Periodically, the local sports discussion gets to the most memorable sporting event of all time.
While it’s not # 1 overall for me, the game that always gets consideration is the President’s Cup Championship Game in August of 2003.
The host & Ontario Champion Owen Sound Woodsmen against the first year KW Kodiaks for the National Senior Lacrosse Championship at the J.D. McArthur Arena.
The President’s Cup Championship game climaxed what was a terrific week for lacrosse, it was certainly well attended, the fans were into it as displayed by their singing of O’Canada prior to the opening faceoff and Bruce Tannahill can tell you the 50-50 jackpot was a doozy.
And the game ?……. Awesome. Back and forth. Each team would get a lead. Neither team could build on the lead or hold the lead.
Tied at 5 in the 3rd with overtime looming, the Kodiaks scored the game winner and desperately held off the Woodsmen for the championship.
I think of this in light of the passing last week of Ian McGough who coached Kitchener to that 2003 championship and later guided the Woodsmen to the Presidents Cup in 2008 & 2009.
About a week after the 2003 Championship Game, I was in a laundromat, when Ian McGough, who had a spot in our region, walked up to me & simply said, ‘ that was a heck of a game, wasn’t it ? ‘
