My ski pipelines were filled with news yesterday and not all of it was positive.
The first e-mail was from Tannis Boisvert, an Owen Sound skier who was taking a shot at the elite level of competition and had some terrific international experiences over the last year.
Boisvert announced that after 8 years of training she was departing from the competitive path somewhat and will be enrolled at UBC.
Between then and now, she’ll plant trees in Northern Ontario, and from what I understand, physical and mental toughness, all the traits she gained through skiing will be valuable.
That was followed by the stunning confirmation from Larisa Yurkiw that Alpine Canada will not support the downhill speed program, thus virtually bombing her dream of competing for Canada at the Olympic Games next year in Russia.
You can imagine the range of emotions she had to deal with and she graciously talked at length about the issue in an interview posted on our web site at bayshorebroadcasting.ca.
The announcement doesn’t end Yurkiw’s desire to compete at the 2014 Olympics, but the amazing aspect is that a very proud Canadian may ski for another country next year.
