I’ve mentioned many times of late, I have a genius streak when it comes to great ideas.
I’ve also made mention that even in times when these gems come together, they somehow manage to backfire.
For example, take the Owen Sound Minor Hockey Group’s Initiation Program, that I was involved with this winter.
One day while walking through my grocery store, I came upon a Hershey display of chocolate Stanley Cups.
This is perfect, I thought. I can take the cup to little league hockey, hide it, and at the end of the session have a Stanley Cup hunt for the kids.
Alan won it the first time we did it and was overjoyed, so I picked up another one, And another one. And another one.
Nolan, the greatest chocolate hunter of all time, found the Cup on back to back sessions and even his father smiled in spite of knowing what that much sugar could do.
And finally, Sam captured the chocolate Cup and was so thrilled with the prize that apparently he took it to bed with him, making sure he kept it far enough away so that his body temperature wouldn’t melt it. These are sharp kids !
What a great idea we had, …………except not everyone was in agreement.
Brock departed one day quite bitter, Lucas ( and several others ) fought hard with their emotions and my buddy, Owen, he just glared at me on the way out and that did it.
I learned a valuable lesson about 5 year olds, about competition for kids, and once again realized, I’m not the promotional genius I thought I was.
