And just like that, it’s Easter Weekend, which means a bunch of things to a bunch of people.
Day off, church visit, family travel, ham supper, plus the 16th annual SMHLPA Oldtimer Hockey Tournament in Owen Sound.
Close to two dozen teams will be here for the weekend, although in fairness, the real highlight isn’t the hockey, but rather the Geoff Stevens Dance Friday night, that usually is both a shaker and a terrific fundraiser for a variety of causes in the community through the years.
Speaking of the community, we’re just hours upon returning from Sault Ste Marie and on the lengthy road home I got thinking about the 1993 playoff series between the two clubs.
For Owen Sound, after dispatching Niagara Falls, it was their second round and for the Soo, it was also their second series of the playoffs, albeit with a difference.
Twenty years ago, the Greyhounds and Peterborough were the Division leaders; Emms & Leyden, and as such, played a series to determine which team hosted the 1993 Memorial Cup.
The Greyhounds won the hosting rights series, lost the OHL Final to the Petes, but then won the Memorial Cup on home ice.
So the issue I kept coming back to on the drive home last night was whether the bidding process a year out is a superior method to having a Super Series to determine who gets to host the Memorial Cup.
I’ve got all weekend to think about it.
Happy Easter.
I’m Fred Wallace
