Here we are in Sault Ste Marie for Game 3 of the Ontario Hockey League’s Western Conference Quarterfinal between the Attack & the Greyhounds.
Somewhat remarkably, over 24 years, Owen Sound and Sault Ste Marie have met just twice previously in the playoffs.
In 1993, the Greyhounds wiped out the Attack in 4 straight, winning the opening two games on home ice by 4 goal margins.
The Greyhounds would outscore Owen Sound 29-9 in that 4 game sweep, just one step on their way to winning the Memorial Cup.
The other time we were here in Sault Ste Marie for playoffs was in 1999 for games 3 & 4 of what would be a 5 game victory for the ” Platers “
The most memorable portion of that Sault segment took place in Game 3 when the Greyhounds exerted pressure and ” Dash ” or whatever the Greyhounds mascot was called at the time, leaned over the glass to taunt Mike Lankshear of the Platers who promptly speared the costumed Hound and picked up a suspension as a result.
Who knows what fun awaits tonight for Game 3 of the Attack-Greyhounds series.
I’m Fred Wallace
